| COMMUNICATION POSTAL SERVICES Thailand’s mail service is reliable and efficient, Major hotels provide basic postal services on their premises. Bangkok’s Central G.P.O. on New Road is open from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Telegrams may be sent at any time of the day or night. Provincial post offices are usually open from 8.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
Air -mail letters weighing 10g or less cost 13 Baht to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and 16 Baht to the Americas. Aerograms cost 10 Baht regardless of the destination, while postcards are 9 Baht. Letter sent by registered mail cost 20 Baht in addition to regular air-mail postage. International express mail (EMS) fees vary according to country of destination. Sample rates for items weighing 100 to 250g are: Japan 250 Baht; Australia, Germany and the UK 215 Baht; France, Canada and the USA 235 Baht Within Thailand, this service costs only 20 Baht (100 to 250g) in addition to regular postage. The rates for parcels shipped by post very according to weight (rising in one-kg increments), country of destination and whether they’re shipped by surface (takes up to two months) or air (one to two weeks). Most Provincial post offices sell do-it-yourself packing boxes (11 sizes!) costing from 5 to 35 Baht; tape and string are provided at no charge.
