Phi Ta Khon Festival: 22 24 June 2012   Phi Ta Khon Festival: 22 24 June 2012   Phi Ta Khon Festival: 22 24 June 2012

The Phi Ta Khon festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei Province and reflects the local Isan belief in ghosts and spirits. Held once a year, it is part of a grand merit-making festival known as the “Boon Luang” festival.

The origins of the Phi Ta Khon Festival can be found in the tale of Lord Buddha’s last great incarnation before attaining Enlightenment. In Buddhist accounts, it is said that when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha’s penultimate incarnation, returned to his city, it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to join the welcoming parade. This very colourful and vibrant Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations.

In a lively re-enactment of the tale, the young men of the community dress up as “spirits” wearing long trailing costumes made from colourful strips of cloth sewn together.

The hideous-looking Phi Ta Khon mask which is made of dried sticky rice husk is painted in bright red, green or other colours, and features the characteristic long pointed nose. This completes the transformation. The clanging sound of the square cowbells worn around the waist announces the presence of the spirits who wield phallic-shaped long-handled swords decorated with red paint. The good-natured, fun-loving spirits mingle among the crowd, teasing and amusing all who take part in the procession. Spectators and visitors are welcome to join in the fun.

There are two types of “spirits” featured in the Phi Ta Khon procession namely the “Phi Ta Khon Yai” — the supreme Phi Ta Khon, and the “Phi Ta Khon Lek”, the ones that are commonly found. The making of the Phi Ta Khon Yai involves the performance of a sacred ritual to seek the blessings of the supreme powers before work on the Phi Ta Khon Yai masks can be initiated. It is also a task reserved exclusively for the descendants of families in which the tradition of making Phi Ta Khon masks has been practised for several generations. The Phi Ta Khon Yai is made of bamboo and is dressed in either male or female attire.

  • Songkran festival

     Songkran festival  Songkran festival

The Songkran festival (Thai: สงกรานต์, Khmer: សង្រ្កាន្ត; from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti,[1] or literally “astrological passage”) is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year’s Day from 13 to 15 April. It coincides with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia.
The date of the festival was originally set by astrological calculation, but it is now fixed. If these days fall on a weekend, the missed days off are taken on the weekdays immediately following. If they fall in the middle of the week, many Thai take off from the previous Friday until the following Monday. Songkran falls in the hottest time of the year in Thailand, at the end of the dry season. Until 1888 the Thai New Year was the beginning of the year in Thailand; thereafter 1 April was used until 1940. 1 January is now the beginning of the year. The traditional Thai New Year has been a national holiday since then.
Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries, and is believed to have been adapted from an Indian festival. It is now observed nationwide, even in the far south. However, the most famous Songkran celebrations are still in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where it continues for six days and even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand for immersion in another culture.

Sriwittayapaknam School in Samut Prakan put on Christmas activities for their students on the morning of 25th December 2009. As the students arrived at school, they were greeted by Santa Claus and a couple dozen fairies. The young fairies handed out candies to the students as they arrived.

During morning assembly, there was singing and dancing around a Christmas Tree. The students sang popular Christmas songs such as Jingle Bells, Away in a Manger and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. All of the students in our school are Buddhists and there are no Christians. However, Thai people are always keen to adopt festivities of other countries as long as they are fun.

  • Tak Bat Thewo Festival: 13th October 2011 The end of the three month Buddhist Rains Retreat Tak Bat Thewo Festival: 13th October 2011 The end of the three month Buddhist Rains Retreat Tak Bat Thewo Festival: 13th October 2011 The end of the three month Buddhist Rains Retreat

This religious event of Uthai Thani is organised in the evening of Ok Phansa (end of Buddhist Lent) on the first day of the waning moon of the eleventh lunar month at Wat Sangkat Rattana Khiri. It is also in line with the Buddhist chronicles when the Lord Buddha returned to earth from heaven and gave Dharma. On the day of Tak Bat Thewo, 500 monks will walk down from the top of Khao Sakae Krang to receive offerings from residents and visitors to the ceremony, which creates an amazing spectacle and has made this tradition become well known nationwide.

Venue: Wat Sangkat Rattana Khiri, Uthai Thani Province

Information: Uthai Thani Municipality Office, Tel. +66 (0) 5651 2005

Tak Bat Thewo Festival: 13th October 2011 The end of the three month Buddhist Rains Retreat Tak Bat Thewo Festival: 13th October 2011 The end of the three month Buddhist Rains Retreat

MEANING: Tak Bat Devo is a kind of offering food to monks in DEVO style and is normally held on the first day of the eleventh waning moon according to the lunar year.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: This tradition of Tak Bat Vedo is derived from the original Pali term “Devorohana” that means “the Buddha’s   coming down from the heavenly world.”   According to the story, immediately after the Buddha had attained Enlightenment, he went forth to preach his teaching (Dharma) to people in all states of India that was then known as Chumpudipa started from the cities of Rajagaha, Varanasi or Banares, Savatthi and Kabilavasatu, the city of his fatherland. In Kabilavasatu city, the Buddha preached sermons to all of his kinsmen, such as King Suddhodana, his father, Queen Mahaprajapati, his aunt and step-mother, Yasodhara or Pimbha, his former wife and Rahula, his son and made them all realise the Four Noble Truths and attain some enlightenment according to their previously accumulated perfection. Then the Buddha remembered Queen Mahamaya, his own mother, who passed away seven days after the Buddha was born. The Buddha thought of repaying her invaluable and incomparable debt and after having deliberately considered thus felt that only the Abhidhamma (the profound truth) would be sufficiently valuable to pay off the debt of her milk and loving kindness. Then, seven years after his Enlightenment, he went up to Tavatimsa heaven, the abode of Indra God, for the rainy season retreat of three months and there he preached her the Abhidhamma Pitaka. On the last day of the retreat as on the first day of the eleventh waning moon in the lunar year the Buddha came down to Earth at the city called Sangkassa, when thousands of people presented food to him and his disciples. For this reason, the first day of the eleventh waning moon is regarded as the Buddha’s day of coming down from the heaven to the human world and so people try their best to make a special food-offering to monks that this kind of merit-making is being practised up to the present time and known as “Tak Bat Devo”.

On the Mother’s Day, I went to my grandmother’s house to show my respect to my grandmums, my mum and my aunt. I showed my espect to them by giving them a jasmine garland doing a krab to their feet. Every child and adult in Thailand will do like this to their mother or women they respect.

    Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival

    Month: May
Venue: Phya Thaen Park in the Northeastern province of Yasothon

The rocket festival, known in Thai as ‘Bun Bang Fai,’ is an ancient local festival that has been carried out continuously till modern times. It is popularly celebrated in Yasothon, a province in Thailand’s northeast, and is usually held in the second week of May.

In Thailand, the month of May is the beginning of the rainy season and farmers are ready to begin planting their rice fields. The festival is associated with traditional beliefs in the supernatural powers that help promote the production of rice crops for the coming planting season.

The legend has it that once there was a rain god named Vassakan who loved to be worshipped with fire. The townspeople created a rocket or ‘Bang Fai’ to send to heaven, where the god resided. They believed that the god would hear their entreaties and bless them with plentiful rain for rice cultivation. So the celebration is entirely to the god of rain.

Like several other Thai festivals, Buddhist monks would be in attendance for the ceremony. The rockets, launch platforms and other decorations for this event are prepared for several weeks before the actual event. An average rocket is some nine metres in length and carries 20-25 kilograms of gunpowder

Originally the rockets were made out of natural materials, but these days, they are slightly more sophisticated. Rockets are packed with several kilos of gunpowder instead. In order to make the rocket festival much more fun, various competitions for the biggest and highest flying rocket are held, all conducted with the undying Thai spirit of ‘sanook’.

On the festival day, rockets are paraded to the launch site. Villagers dress in colorful traditional costumes, playing, teasing and dancing, to accompany the procession.
The climax of the festival is the launch time. The rockets are fired from their launch platforms one by one. Noisy folk music and cheers can be heard for each liftoff. The rocket that reaches the greatest height is declared the winner. The owner of this rocket dances and pushes for rewards from the crowds. The owners of rockets that exploded or failed to fly are thrown in the mud.

Whether or not their wishes are granted as they believe, the festival helps strengthen and promote harmony among the villagers, which will be needed when the new crop season begins.
